Stainless Steel Sheets - Choosing Correct Metal Sheets

Stainless steel sheets are effectively used around the globe. This is a marvellous metal alloy with countless benefits and has integrated itself efficiently in our everyday life. It is used for all domestic, industrial as well as commercial purposes. It has become such a normal habit to use these sheets that we may overlook its presence but unlike the same way its absence would be greatly felt. This alloy has been found to be useful in every corner of this globe.

Why Stainless Steel Is a Better Option:

Unlike carbon steel the stainless steel does not possess a corrosive nature. This boon of metallurgic science has many advantages compared to the forever rusting and moisture effected old school metal alloys. Stainless steel sheets are made by 20th century scientists by combining steel with chromium, which is 80%-90% stain proof i.e., stain or rust resilient. Since its inception it was chiefly used for cutlery making but engineers worldwide soon found its other useful applications in various industries. It is found to be especially useful in construction and architecting businesses. It is equally useful in fields like manufacturing medical instruments, household appliances, commercial kitchen appliances, lighting fixtures etc.

Choosing Stainless Steel Sheets:

There are many common misconceptions regarding stainless steel sheets. One most widely spread misconception is that it is completely stain proof. As a matter of fact, it can corrode over a period of long time duration but it does not rust for sure and can sustain for many years without getting affected. A stainless steel fabrication about 3mm thickness is referred to as stain free steel sheet. While choosing such sheets one has to consider a few factors such as:

  • Thickness of The Metal:

The width of the sheets ranges from 0.4mm to 2.5mm. Sheets of thickness lesser than 0.4mm are known as foil and if the thickness exceeds 3mm then it is referred to as a metal plate. The dimension of standard 0.4mm to 0.9mm stainless steel sheets ranges from 2000mmx1000mm to 2500mmx1250mm. For sheets between 0.9mm and 2.5mm a 3000mmx1500mm dimension is usually found as standard sheets. Selecting the correct thickness and dimension is crucial for any project. After deciding the thickness, it can be customized. The sheets are usually custom cut by laser cutter, guillotine or water jet cutters.

  • Finish of The Sheets:

The finish of the stainless steel sheets depends on the purpose for which they are being used. The way the sheets are prepared makes them able to accept a lot of surface patterns or finishes. To begin with they are rolled out to achieve correct thickness, then they are annealed and finally they are rolled out again using polished rollers. The entire process makes them ready to accept finishing patterns. Among all different types, brushed finish is most popularly picked. Many also prefer the satin finish that contains a dull-brushed shine. The mirror finish is a great shiny finish that reflects light to a great extent. As the finishing is done, an application of plastic coating is yet again done to give the sheets further protection.

  • Grade of Corrosion Proof Steel Sheets:

Stainless steel sheets come in different grades. Grade 316 and grade 304 are the most popular grades. 316 is most popular as it gives better protection compared to 304 grade in corrosive environments and also keeps the sheets protected in salt water environments. It is the most rust free grade of this alloy sheets. The 316 is also a food friendly grade as food products can be safely packaged using this grade of alloy sheet.

The above mentioned factors will help you make a good decision. Let’s go to the details for more information about other stainless steel sheet products.
