A split system is an air conditioning system that uses a refrigerant as the fluid for heat exchange. A split AC system has a separate evaporator, compressor and condenser. It flexible, simple, reliable and provides superb performance. The split systems have an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The outdoor unit consists of the compressor, condenser coil and expansion coil, and it is installed on the exterior wall. Steps of installing split systems:

  • The first step of installing a split system is installing the compressor unit, the connection of lines and pulling a vacuum on the lines. The connections must be tight to avoid any accident. Next, the vacuum pipe is connected to the port of the compressor and the low-pressure gauge valve must be opened. The low-pressure hose is connected to the compressor unit and the yellow hose is connected to the vacuum pump. A vacuum pull is conducted for 30 minutes to move all the water vapor in the copper lines.
  • The second step of installing a split system is to seal the nuts on the ends of the copper lines. This step is essential to prevent leaks and ensure the long life of the split systems.
  • The third step comprises of losing the low-pressure gauge. The liquid line valve is partially opened using an Allen key. Next, the gas valve is fully opened. The manifold is disconnected from the compressor, and the liquid line valve is fully opened.
  • The final step is to power up the unit so as to enjoy the cool air.

Advantages of split AC systems:

  • Split AC systems have an easier installation process. It requires less labor to install. No ductwork is necessary and the connector between the indoor and outdoor units requires only an opening of 3 inches.
  • The split system ensures greater energy efficiency too. Ductworks cause energy efficiency problems and leakage. In split systems, there are no ductworks which save time and money. 
  • Indoor installation becomes easier with split systems. These days, indoor units come in beautiful outer coverage which you can match with your room décor.
  • Since most of the work is done outside, a split system creates lesser noise than a window system. It creates less than 19 decibels of noise inside the room.

  • A window ac gives an inlet to intruders, whereas a split system is much more secure, as there is only a small hole through which no one can enter.
  • A split system comes with the option of climate control which is excellent for round the year use.
  • The current energy consumed by a split system is much less. There are lower energy bills that are profitable for the owner.

Disadvantages of split AC systems:

  • The initial cost of split systems is thirty percent more than window systems.
  • There may be a problem of water build-up and leakage due to condensation.
  • The compressor of a split system creates a lot of noise. It can be a problem if you are residing in a populated area. The neighbors might object to the loud noise your compressor makes if the houses are close to each other.

Maintenance of split AC systems:

  • A split system works better in a clean environment. You must keep the ductless air conditioner clean on the outside. The outdoor portion of the vents should also be cleaned.
  • Make sure to switch off the split system when you are cleaning it
  • The air filters are the most important components and you need to clean them regularly to ensure the longevity of your expensive split system.
  • The coil and condenser should be dirt and debris free.
  • Check the pipes properly at regular intervals to prevent any leakage.
