Many people become anxious and are not sure what to expect when they have an appointment with an optometrist, especially in instances when they haven’t gone through an extensive eye exam before or have had it quite long ago. There is a broad variety of tests and procedures that are carried out by an eye doctor to examine your eyes and their health. These may be simple ones like asking you to read the eye chart or a bit more complex ones like using a high-powered lens to get to the tiniest details of your eyes.
The entire process can take about an hour or more to complete depending on the doctor and the number of tests that they want you to take to properly evaluate your vision and health of your eyes.
Here Are A Few Normal Things To Brief You About What To Expect On Your Visit To An Optometrist:
Optometrist |
Eye exams start with a short question-answer session where the optometrist will try to understand your vision and eye health. You don’t have to be nervous about it but just make sure that you mention all the important details and any changes in your medical history associated with your eye health.
An Updated Way To Check Your Prescription
The old-style retinoscope is an instrument that an optometrist uses to cast light in your eyes so that the way it enters into your eyes can be measured. This is called the refractive error and it helps to find out prescriptions for glasses or contact lenses. The new way to check this is through a machine called the autorefractor which does the same thing but more efficiently than the manual way.
The Basic Visual Acuity Tests
This test is the most fundamental one which measures the clarity and sharpness in your vision. The optometrist will cover one of your eyes and will ask you to read letters of different sizes from a chart at a distance and from up close.
Color Perception Tests
This is a test where the ability of your eyes to tell the difference between different colors is tested. Again, one of our eyes is covered and you will be asked to look at a series of cards with a multicolored dot pattern. These colored patterns will have a number or symbol which you will have to identify.
Ocular Motility Test Is Done To Check Eye Movements
This test is performed to determine if your eyes can properly follow a moving object and/or quickly move in between to grip on those two separate targets. Putting smooth eye movements to test is more common.

Eye Pressure Tests
This test is designed to measure the pressure inside your eyes and also a test for glaucoma. It is done by a machine that blows a small puff of air into your eye which is painless.
Slit Lamp Exam
A slit lamp is a binocular microscope which an optometrist uses to test the structures of your eye under a high degree of magnification. You will need to place your forehead and chin against the points given in the instrument before you and the doctor will examine your eye closely.
After the tests and procedures, you will have an honest discussion about the present state of your eye health and vision. An optometrist will suggest you some vision corrections for your eyes like sunglasses or contact lenses. Any other issues which need immediate and careful attention will be brought to your notice so that you can preserve and protect your eyes.
