Steps To Create An Effective Business Disaster Recovery Plan

Business Disaster Recovery

Disasters, whether they are natural or man-made, cause disruption to the functioning of society economically and environmentally. All businesses are especially affected by the occurrence of a disaster and according to the statistics, up to 25 percent of these businesses do not reopen after a major disaster has taken place. It is due to this reason, it is essential to devise a business disaster recovery plan in advance.

What is a Business Disaster Recovery Plan?

A business disaster recovery plan consists of a set of procedures, mostly in a written form that is to be followed before, during and after the disaster. Through this plan, a business aims to recover the IT data, assets and facilities after the disaster has taken place and enable them to resume their business operation efficiently by reducing the effect of the disaster.

There are different types of business disaster recovery strategies used by different businesses following preventive, detective and corrective measures. A disaster recovery plan always consists of an answer to three questions pertaining what the objective or the purpose of the plan is, which set of people will be responsible in case of any disruptions and mainly what procedure they will follow at that time.

Steps To Create This Plan

#1. Prepare A Checklist and Accordingly Plan For The Possible Risks

A business should start by preparing a checklist with sections including communications, safety, employees, and data, whereby each section will contain systems and items they could possibly need in case a disaster occurs. Then research on the possible types of hazards that could take place near your locality and effectively work on the checklist accordingly. You should also make a list of all the places that your employees can seek shelter at in times of disaster.

#2. Create An Emergency Kit

One can never be sure about what could happen at these times. Therefore, it is a good idea to prepare an emergency kit in advance as a precautionary measure. Some of the items that must be kept in this kit are bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, and first-aid supplies that would last people for at least 72 hrs.

#3. Prepare For A Back-Up Plan

A data back up and disaster recovery system (BDR) is often installed by businesses as a precautionary measure which protects their data in times of disaster or even a cyber attack. Hence, all business disaster recovery strategies mainly focus on keeping some sort of back up for their company which will minimize the effect of the disaster. Also, it is a good idea to document your equipment in forms of photos or videos so that you know what item was kept at what place. This helps in restoring your workplace after the disaster.

Be Prepared For The Disaster At All Times

Every business should have a recovery team with specific roles and responsibilities assigned to each member of the team. They should be instructed on what task they would have to execute immediately after the disaster takes place. Further, the business should keep a list of certain emergency numbers like that off insurance companies, electrician, media, and plumbers. Keeping a battery-operated walkie- talkie for back up is also a good idea. Businesses should keep a check of their systems regularly and hold training sessions for all their employees to train them on what to do in case a disaster occurs.

Conclusion

By devising a well thought and researched business disaster recovery plan, one can solve all these issues and restore their business effectively and minimize the loss as well.
