Tips to Take Care of Your Exhaust System

A car’s exhaust system is the one which often gets neglected. Most car owners pay much attention to the functioning of the engine or the tires, however, the exhaust system that is responsible for the proper emission of gases remains neglected. The exhaust system not only helps to transport these gases from the engine to the muffler but to help reduce harmful gases as well. The gases if not treated adequately can be harmful to the environment. This is one of the most crucial tasks of the exhaust system. The auto exhaust tires may suffer wear and tear and thus routine maintenance tricks will help them keep in good condition. Here we will list down a few tips to take care of your exhaust system:

  • Repair broken components: The exhaust system comprises of several parts like the exhaust manifold, oxygen sensor, muffler, auto exhaust pipes and the like. Every part plays a crucial role in the functioning of the system. Make sure you are aware of a broken part; may it not be the most crucial of all, but it should not be neglected. For example, exhaust hangers are necessary to secure the pipes to the underside of your car, but they can be damaged pretty easily. When this happens, the system sags, which puts a strain on other components. If you have broken hangers or snapped bolts, they should be replaced at the earliest.
  • Fix leaks quickly: If you do not want your vehicle to break down in the middle of nowhere, you must make it a point to mend the leaks at the earliest. Since there are several auto exhaust pipes that function, leaks are normal. Moreover, owing to increased heat, temperature and pressure, there are chances of leaks. Especially the exhaust manifold leaks the maximum. They are covered with gaskets, but they can fail and start leaking. The auto exhaust pipes especially can corrode, more if they are made of aluminum or steel. You must keep a check on the exhaust system at all times to avoid leaks.
  • Get the diagnostics system checked: All modern cars today have onboard diagnostics system that is designed to monitor the exhaust system and the auto exhaust pipes. They alert you if there is a glitch or the part is not functioning well. However, sometimes there might be a problem with the diagnostic system. Thus, regular maintenance is a must.
  • Periodic checkup of the exhaust system: There cannot be a better way to keep the vehicle in proper working condition but to seek professional help. You must drive a vehicle to the service centre regularly. This is especially important for proper emissions. The Oxygen sensors may break down and emit harmful gases or pollutant that is not only harmful to the environment but also for our well being. Proper monitoring of the exhaust system including the auto exhaust pipes are mandatory.
  • Prevent rusting: The outside of the exhaust can be trusted by rain, hail, and snow. In the winter, the problem only worsens as there is salt in the grit applied to roads, which speeds up the corrosion process. To prevent rust on the outside of your exhaust in winter, spray a solution of ten parts water to one-part baking soda over the underbody of your vehicle. The baking soda will neutralize the salt and prevent it from causing further damage. Thereafter dry the underbody then apply a wax sealant to prevent further corrosion.
If you want the exhaust system to be in a good and working condition for years, follow the above-mentioned tips.
