Whenever a local electrician visits a household, a common sight is him carrying a box of various tools which he will require while carrying out his electrical operations. Without these tools, his work will go erratic. Not only does he carry those tools but is also experienced in their usage and functions. Some of the tools used by a local electrician are mentioned below along with their functions: 
  • Conduit Bender: These are widely used to bend and stretch different types of electrical conduit. They are available in numerous varieties such as hand-powered, electrically-powered and hydraulic-powered. 
  • Lineman’s Pliers: These are used for general purposes such as cutting, bending, stretching, crimping and straightening wires. 
  • Diagonal Pliers: These pliers comprise cutting blades that are used on smaller wires. They are occasionally used for pulling out nails and staples from the electrical boards. 
  • Needle-Nose Pliers: These pliers are generally used for fine work like specially for electrical wiring purposes. 
  • Wire strippers: They are available in numerous sizes and shapes. They possess special blades for stripping wire insulation without causing any nicks to the conducting wire. Cable strippers are a popular type of wire strippers which are used for the outer cable jacket of electrical wirings. 
  • Cable Cutters: They are generally used for cutting larger cables. 
  • Armored Cable Cutters: These tools are used for cutting metal sleeves on metal clad cables. 
  • Multimeter: These are instruments which are used for measuring electrical parameters and are found as a digital display. Their common features include voltage, resistance, current etc. 
  • Unibit or Step-Bit: They are used for drilling purposes to create custom knockouts in a junction box 
  • Fish Tape: They are used for the manipulation of cables and wires and are dropped into the floor or ceiling after which the cable is pulled back.
  • Crimping Tools: They are used for the application of splices. Some of them contain ratchets to apply pressure in the right direction. 
  • Insulation Resistance Tester: Also known as Megger, they can apply several thousand volts of electricity to cables to find out the insulation resistance value.  
  • Voltmeter: This tool is one of the most important tools used by a local electrician which is used to measure the potential difference between two points in an electrical circuit.    
Apart from the above-mentioned tools, some other general tools used by a local electrician are screwdrivers, hammers, reciprocating saws, drywall saws, flashlights, chisel, tongue and groove pliers drilling machines and so on.
