  • Insulation Limit - Even though brick and block save energy, there is a limit to how much insulation can be installed between the cavity walls. Ideally, the cavity should not be more than 10cm to avoid structural issues.
  • Slow Construction - Brick and block layer construction has many advantages, but their biggest disadvantage is that it can take a long time for construction as compared to other building materials like timber. This is because brick and blocks are built by hand and they require more workers to work for long hours. This can lead to increase in the cost of the construction also. 
  • Risk of Cracks - If you are using brick and block for your cavity walls, there are high chances of a settlement of the cracks. The reason being the individual walls which are used for cavity walls are tall and thin and this can lead to settlement of the cracks. Hence, it is very important to be careful while using brick and block layers for your construction.
  • Not Suitable for Extreme Weather Conditions - Brick and block layer constructions cannot take place in severe weather conditions like heavy rains or low temperatures. This is because brick and block construction are wet and needs a lot of time to dry. So, if the temperature is freezing, construction could expand, and which means replacement. It is because of this disadvantage that most of the parts of the world where the climate is very cold and moist, timber constructions are preferred more than bricks and blocks.
  • Allows Dampness - Brick and block cavities can allow indoors for dampness. This is because if too much mortar falls on the cavity, it would allow damp to seep through the inner skin of the wall. It is very important to pay attention to the cleanliness of the cavity walls, as if not taken care it can lead to bigger problems.
